Frequently Asked Question
What is the Emerging Scholars program?
The Emerging Scholars program connects first-year students with upper-class mentors and provides support in adjusting to both the academic and social life at Salem State University. Students selected to be a part of the Emerging Scholars program will have access to a network of support designed to provide them with motivation, encouragement, and a community of friends who are also committed to doing their very best in college.
How does the program work?
First-year students participating in the program are divided into groups and each group is matched with a pair of trained upper-class mentors who have similar interests. Mentors work out of the FYE Office and are available to meet individually with students who have specific questions or would like additional support. Mentors also hold regular group meetings throughout the course of the year, coordinating social activities and informational workshops around topics that students have identified as critical to their success. In addition, participants are able to access free printing services in the FYE Office as long as they continue attending bi-weekly group meetings with their assigned mentor.

Students who have been invited may sign up at the link sent to them via email/acceptance letter. If students lost the information they may email firstname.lastname@example.org.
What do I get out of the program?
Besides the support of an upper class mentor and invitations to attend social and academic support programming, participants who participate fully in the activities scheduled throughout the year and maintain a 2.5 GPA are inducted for free into Alpha Omega Psi, a local honor society honoring first-year success.
